DesignerLaundry Wants to Belt You

Update your wardrobe with belts that pack a punch.

The key to mastering this season's hourglass silhouette is to invest in a belt. Quicker than you can say wasp waist, they will create a curve here and a cinch there. The skill lies in choosing the one that most flatters your shape.

The best belt for your body shape:

• Pear shaped: Medium to wide belts with statement buckles will draw attention away from your hips.

• Rounded tummy as with the pear shaped: Wear an attention-seeking buckle to define your waist, then add an light elongating cardigan.

• Short: A skinny patent belt will bring your wardrobe up to date and not outweigh your proportion.

• Top heavy: A sash belt with a buckle will cinch in your waist.

• Long Torso: Corset belts boost curves and regulate proportions.

• No waist: Belts that are skinny or of medium width create the illusion of "catwalk" curves.

And for the outfit...

Obi/cummerbunds: Wear with tailored pants; over a long fitted jacket; and a sleek wrap-dress.

Skinny belts: Wear with an hourglass dress; shirts (particularly those you don't know whether to tuck in or wear out); and a fitted jacket to create a 1940s silhouette, cardigans and sweaters. Heels heighten the femininity.

Wide belts: These look stunning when worn over a winter coat. Team with knee-high boots and a turtle neck.

Corset belts: If you have the figure, wear one with a tailored dress – particularly in jersey; and over this season's knee-length coats.

Bold buckle belts: Wear with long shirts and sweaters; and with high-waisted, wide-legged pants.

Sashes: In satin or soft leather with evening dresses, long black gloves and lots of bling.
